Moorer's double-double helps men's basketball defeat Georgia Southwestern

GREENWOOD, S.C. – DaJuan Moorer scored three crucial baskets in the final minutes and finished with a double-double, leading the short-handed Lander Bearcats to a 64-61 Peach Belt Conference victory over Georgia Southwestern Saturday afternoon at Horne Arena.

Lander improved to 11-14 overall and 6-10 in the Peach Belt.

The Hurricanes fell to 9-16, 5-12.

The Bearcats were playing without Nigel Colvin, LaRaymond Spivery and Navaughn Maise, Dominic Stanford was limited to 17 minutes due to injury, and Jared Sherfield was also limited due to injury.

Moorer paced Lander with 21 points on 10 of 14 shooting from the floor while grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds.

Tommy Moore added 14 points for the Bearcats including two crucial free throws in the final seconds.

Deandre Robinson contributed 10 points for Lander while pacing the team with four assists.

Jarrett Anderson and Donte Tatum paced Georgia Southwestern with 17 points apiece while Devon Higgs added 14 points.

Adderton opened the game with a pair of 3-pointers as the Hurricanes led 6-0. Lander grabbed its first lead at 9-8 with 13:47 left after two Moorer baskets including a dunk, Robinson's 3-pointer from the right wing, and two Moore free throws.

Georgia Southwestern used a 14-5 run to build a 22-14 advantage at the seven-minute mark.

The Bearcats ended the half on a 17-3 run and led 31-25 at the break. The run started with nine unanswered points as Sherfield swished a 3-pointer from the right-wing, Moorer had a dunk and a short jumper, and Moore made a layup as Lander led 23-22 with 3:25 to go.

After the Hurricanes regained the lead on Kahlon Whitley's 3-pointer, the Blue and Gold scored the last eight points of the half. Sherfield made a 3-pointer from the left wing which hit the side of the rim and bounced in, Moorer converted a layup, and Moore swished a 3-pointer from the top of the key with four seconds left.

Deshundre Rucker scored twice early in the second half while Robinson added a layup as the Bearcats led 38-29 at the 17-minute mark.

Sebastian Augustave made a long 3-pointer, giving Lander its first double-digit lead at 41-31 with 15:23 left.

Moorer's three-point play and Moore's mid-range jumper upped the Bearcat advantage to 46-35 with 13:18 to go.

Georgia Southwestern cut its deficit to five. But Robinson's driving basket in the paint gave Lander its double-digit lead back at 53-43 with 8:37 left. Augustave's 3 from the right-wing made it 56-46 at 7:16.

Jamari Dean's put-back brought the Hurricanes within 56-55 with 3:21 to go, completing a 9-0 run.

Moorer took a lob pass from Augustave and laid it in, giving Lander a 58-55 advantage with 2:45 left. 

Georgia Southwestern responded with an Adderton put-back and then a Tatum layup to take a 59-58 lead with 1:19 left.

Moorer came through again, driving inside and laying one off the glass as the Bearcats were back up 60-59 with 1:07 to go.

After Adderton missed a 3-point attempt, Moorer grabbed the defensive rebound and then came through on the offensive end one more time. Moorer's mid-range jumper gave Lander a 62-59 advantage with 26 seconds left.

Adderton pulled the Hurricanes within 62-61 with eight seconds left. But Moore made a pair of free throws and Tatum air-balled a 3-point attempt at the buzzer.
