YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – It took extra time, but the Lander men's basketball team came away with a 79-71 victory on the road at Young Harris on Wednesday.
Lander moves to 12-14 overall and 7-10 in the PBC while Young Harris falls to 6-21 overall and 3-15 in the PBC.
Deandre Robinson led all scorers with 23 points on the night. He went 8-of-12 from the field while hauling in seven rebounds along with three assists and steals. DaJuan Moorer and Sebastian Augustave joined Robinson in double-figure scoring against the Mountain Lions.
The Bearcats found themselves down 32-28 at the half to Young Harris after the Mountain Lions were able to go 6-of-12 from 3-point range.
After allowing a free throw to be made by the Mountain Lions, Robinson scored the first basket for the Bearcats with a jumper with 19:25 in the first. After the Mountain Lions went up 6-5 with 16:29 left, Jared Sherfield would connect on a jumper to put Lander back up with 16:12 remaining. Lander would a 9-1 spurt to go up 14-7 before Young Harris would battle back and eventually retake the lead on a 3-pointer with 8:36 to go up 17-16. Young Harris would start to run away in the first half after a 10-2 run put them up 24-18 with 5:27 left in the first half before Lander would finish the half on a 10-8 run to get the contest to 32-28.
Lander shot 11-of-28 from the field which saw a 1-for-10 performance from long range in the first half.
The second half saw improvements to the Bearcat's shooting, as the Blue and Gold shot 48.1 percent from the field (13-of-27) and 54.5 percent from 3-point range (6-of-11).
The Bearcats dug in and battled with the Mountain Lions for the majority of the second half before going on a 19-9 run starting with a 3-pointer from Augustave with 10:54 left. Augustage would have nine of his 11 points on the night for Lander during that stretch. Lander would use that run to eventually retake the lead on another Augustave 3-pointer to go up 58-57 with 3:28 remaining. Each side would have chances to run away with the game, but neither side was able to pull away as Lander and Young Harris ended up tied 67-67 at the end of regulation.
Lander held Young Harris to four points in overtime while scoring 12 to clinch the victory. Robinson got things moving for Lander with a 3-pointer with 4:33 left in overtime before Nigel Colvin and Moorer added in a layup and jumper to push Lander ahead even more. The first point for the Mountain Lions wouldn't fall until a free throw was made with 2:42. Young Harris would score the remaining three points of a 3-pointer with 51 seconds remaining but wouldn't be able to get anything past the Bearcats defense.
Lander finishes the regular season with a visit from No. 21/25 Flagler on Saturday, February 26.
