NEWBERRY, S.C. – After winning the first game of the series 8-1 against No. 15 Newberry at Dolny Stadium on Friday, the Lander baseball fell 14-6 on the road to the Wolves Saturday afternoon.
Lander drops to 3-5 overall while Newberry moves to 9-1.
Mason Streater led the way on offense, as he had three hits and three RBI. Vincent DeRubeis and Landon Dupert all had two hits and one RBI each.
Lander and Newberry wasted no time getting runs on the scoreboard, as the two sides combined for five runs after the first inning.
Chandler Moeller doubled to right-center with and out before a single from DeRubeis through the left side scored the first run of the game. Streater would single through the left side to score DeRubeis and give Lander a 2-0 edge. The Wolves would score three runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead.
After a scoreless second inning for both teams, Lander would retake the lead on a two-run blast from Streater that scored Dupert as well to make it 4-3 Lander. Newberry would also plate a run in the third, as a ground out scored a run from third to tie the game at 4-4 through three innings.
The fifth inning would see Newberry jump out in front of Lander after an inside-the-park home run scored two runs before a fielding error would plate another to give Newberry a 7-4 lead. The Bearcats would commit six total errors on the game.
Newberry would come back for more in the sixth inning. With the bases loaded, Newberry would slap a double down the leftfield line to clear the bases and go up 10-4. A ground out and home run in back-to-back at-bats would put Newberry up 12-4.
Lander would close the gap to six runs in the seventh after Walker McDowell scored on a wild pitch ad DeRubeis would come home on a single up the middle from Dupert to make it a 12-6 contest.
Newberry would plate two more runs in the eighth inning on a wild pitch and double to left field to put them ahead 14-6.
Bryce Jackson would get the start against the Wolves and would pick up the loss after going 4.2 innings on the road. He allowed seven runs, two earned while striking out three and giving up three hits. Braeden Burton, Anson Merrick, Drew Luckey and Tyler Bowen all made relief appearances.
Lander and Newberry conclude the series as Dolny Stadium on Sunday for a noon start.
