No. 4 Lander wrestling goes 3-1 at the Carolina Clash

GREENWOOD –  No. 4 Lander wrestling put on a show on Saturday as It hosted the Carolina Clash at Horne Arena.

The Bearcats went 3-1 on the day and advance to 8-1 overall.

No. 4 Lander (41) vs Kentucky Wesleyan (3)

Lander began its first match with 10 quick points against the Panthers. Joey Felix picked up a 12-1 victory by major decision that saw three takedowns and a four-point near fall at 125.

Kaiden Fisher earned a win at 133 by forfeit before Kentucky Wesleyan earned a 5-1 win at 141 to make it 10-3.

The Bearcats then saw back-to-back wins by major decision.

Randy Myers earned an 8-0 victory at 149 while Bryson Ethington took an 11-2 victory to up Lander's lead to 18-3.

David Hunsberger took a 16-0 tech fall in the first period with four consecutive near falls at 165 before Jack Bond earned another tech fall where he won 17-0 at 174.

Nathan Buckovich continued the winning streak with a 16-9 win by decision that featured seven takedowns from Buchovich at 184.

Ashton Hefner picked up the third win by major decision for the Bearcats with an 8-0 win at 197. Hefner was able to get bonus points with a pair of third-period two-point near falls to push Lander ahead 35-3.

The Bearcats finished their match against Kentucky Wesleyan with a bang as Hayden Lawter won by pin in the second period to give Lander a 41-3 final score.

No. 4 Lander (48) vs Simon Fraser (0)

Lander was once again first to put points on the board, as they established an early 12-0 edge. Felix took six points at 125 from a forfeit while Elijah Lusk won via a first-period pin.

Caleb Cox took a 5-3 win by decision at 141 to keep the point streak going for the Bearcats and extend the lead to 15-0.

The Bearcats would see nine more points roll in at 149 and 157. Jack Tangen battled his way to a 5-3 sudden victory win at 157 while Ethington took a victory via forfeit at 157 to bring Lander's lead to 24-0.

Lander wouldn't take its foot off the pedal as Hunsberger took a first-period pin to give Lander a 30-0 advantage.

Bond would battle his way to a 9-7 sudden victory at 174 that saw two takedowns in the third period to tie the contest.

Logan Hall earned the third pin of the contest for Lander as he pinned his opponent 1:55 into the first period to give Lander a 39-0 lead.

Anthony Yacovetti was next in line for a pin, as he joined the first-period pin club to give Lander a 45-0 edge.

Lander would conclude its match with Simon Fraser after Juan Edmond-Holmes earned an 8-2 win by decision that featured a four-point near fall in the first period.

No. 4 Lander (36) vs No. 12 Glenville State (6)

The Bearcats were the first to score for the third straight match as it jumped out to an 18-0 edge after the first four matches.

Kaiden Fisher and Elijah Lusk both battled their way to close victory by decisions while Zeth Brower and Tangen both performed first-period pins to put Lander in front early against the Pioneers. Lusk, who was ranked No. 6 in Div. II at 133 took down the No. 5 wrestler in the nation from Glenville State.

Ethington thrilled Horn Arena with an 8-4 win by decision at 157 that saw a pair of takedowns in the third period to continue the winning streak for the Bearcats and move the score to 21-0.

Lander would not slow down as Hunsberger fired off a 10-5 win by decision to make it a 24-0 contest that saw takedowns in all three periods along with a pair of escapes in the third period.

Jack Bond grinding out a 3-1 win by decision that saw the match tied early in the third period. Bond would get a late takedown to take the lead and victory at 174. Bond, who was ranked No. 8 in the recent NWCA rankings, defeated Hunter DeLong who was ranked No. 5.

Hall, who was ranked No.6 in the NWCA Div. II rankings, kept the streak of wins by decision alive with a 4-1 victory over Cole Houser, who was ranked No. 12. With Bond and Hall winning, Lander advanced to a 30-0 advantage.

Lander would see its advantage rise to 36-0 after Joran Williams had to retire with a medical forfeit to Yacovetti while Glenville State would get its only points of the match with a medical forfeit at 285.

No. 4 Lander (17) vs No. 7 West Liberty (15)

For the first time all day, the Bearcats weren't the first to score. West Liberty took wins by decision at 125 and 133 to take a 6-0 lead before Brower recorded his second pin of the day in the second period to tie the contest at 6-6.

West Liberty would take back the lead at 149 after getting a 3-2 victory in a tiebreaker before taking three more points to establish a 12-6 edge.

Hunsberger would cut into the Hilltopper's lead after coming back in the third period with an escape to get within one and then taking the lead with a late takedown for his fourth win of the day.

The Bearcats would see another win by decision, this time from Bond getting a takedown in sudden victory to tie the contest 12-12 and take his fourth victory of the day.

West Liberty would counter with a win by decision at 184 with a narrow 3-2 win to go up 15-12.

Lander would go back on top heading into the final match of the day after Yacovetti recorded an 18-3 tech fall to put Lander up 17-15.

West Liberty would draw the final blow, as they took a 5-2 win by decision to clinch the match 18-17.

The Bearcats are back in action with a trip to Indianapolis, Ind., where they'll take part in the Midwest Classic from December 17-18.
