Dunn scored 24 as Bearcats surpass the 100-point mark for second time this season

GREENWOOD – Noah Dunn scored 24 points as the Lander Bearcats surpassed the 100-point mark for the second time this season, beating King University 106-72 Sunday afternoon at Horne Arena.

Lander improved to 5-1 on the season. The Tornado fell to 2-4.

Dunn made nine of 14 shots from the floor including six of 10 from behind the 3-point arc to pace the Bearcats.

Jared Sherfield added 18 points, Jaylon Pugh scored 12 points, and Dominic Stanford added 11 points for the Blue and Gold.

Jared Cooper scored nine points while sharing team-high honors with seven assists for Lander. Tommy Moore also had seven assists. Ajang Aguek contributed eight points while pacing the Bearcats with 10 rebounds.

Lander made 41 of 82 shots from the floor (50 percent), 14 of 35 from 3-point range (40 percent) and 10 of 10 free throws. The Bearcats out-rebounded King 44-30.

Michael Mays paced the Tornado with 26 points, Kenny Turner contributed 12 points and a team-high seven boards, and Brandon Lamberth added 10 points.

Both teams got off to fast shooting starts as the game was tied at 10-all at the first media timeout with 15:37 left. King was 5-for-6 from the floor while the Bearcats were 4-for-6 and led by Aguek's six points.

Pugh made a 3-pointer from the right corner and a runner in the lane, Sherfield hit a pair of free throws, Cooper made a pair of layups, and Chandler Lindsey drained a 3 as Lander led 25-16 at the midway point of the first half.

Lamberth's 3 pulled the Tornado within 27-23 just inside eight-minute mark. Then Sherfield led the Bearcats on a game-breaking 13-0 run, hitting two 3-pointers and flying in for a slam dunk. The streak also included Dunn's trey and a Stanford basket as the Blue and Gold led 40-23 with 5:42 to go.

Dunn hit two more 3-pointers and a basket as Lander led 53-38 at halftime. Dunn led the way with 18 points on seven of nine shooting while Mays scored 17 for King.

Dunn opened the second half with his fifth 3 of the game and then as he was sandwiched between two defenders found Sherfield streaking toward the goal for a back door dunk, making it 58-40 one minute in.

Sherfield's breakaway dunk increased the Blue and Gold's lead to 64-42 with 16:50 to go. Aguek pinned a two-handed blocked shot to the backboard, leading to a fast break finished by Stanford's three-point play making it 67-44 inside the 15-minute mark.

Moore's steal and alley-oop pass to Stanford increased the advantage to 71-48 with under 13 minutes to go.

Deandre Robinson followed a 3-pointer with a layup as the Bearcats led 76-46 midway through the second half.

Dunn and Pugh made 3s and then Lander hit the 90-point mark on Sherfield's put-back, making it 90-63 with 5:17 to go.

The Bearcats reached the 100-point mark on Connor McKay's basket and then Nigel Colvin and Sebastian Augustave added 3s in the final minute as the Blue and Gold scored a season high in points.
