Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

First Quarter Dooms Bearcats Against #9 Carson-Newman

Aiken, S.C. - It took a bit for the Lander Women's Basketball Team to find their rhythm as they were outscored 23-9 in the first quarter but after that the Bearcats were able to push the #9 Carson-Newman Eagles but would eventually fall by a score of 79-70.

Five players would finish the game in double figures for Lander as Quadaija Langley would lead the way with 18 points. Tyasia Freeman would lead the way on the boards as she would finish with nine rebounds. Freeman also would have two blocks as well.

Cory Santoro would score the first five points for the Bearcats but the Eagles would close the quarter on a 17-4 run to open a 23-9 lead after the first ten minutes of play.

Both teams would be about equal on the turnover margin but the Eagles would outscore Lander 29-19 off turnovers to keep the Bearcats at arm's length.

An 11-2 run by the Bearcats with buckets from Freeman, Santoro, and Langley would cut the Eagles' lead to eight but the Eagles would get it back up to 13 with just under five to go in the half. But Lander would not go away quietly as they would have a 7-0 run to cut the lead back down to six with just under two minutes to go. Carson-Newman would respond with another run to get the lead back up to ten heading into halftime.

Carson-Newman would get the lead up to as much as 15 in the third quarter but the Bearcats would refuse to back down as a another quick run would get the lead back down to six points once again but Carson-Newman would continue to keep it a multi-possession game as they would reopen the lead back to 12 heading to the last ten minutes.

A Tyasia Freeman jumper would cut the lead back down to eight but that would be as close as Lander would get as the deficit would bounce back and forth between 9 and 13 for the rest of the game. Lander would close the game on a 4-0 run with free throws from Langley and Freeman to close out the scoring.

The Bearcats will be back in action on Sunday as they face the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears in Aiken, S.C. That game is scheduled to start at 1:00 PM.
