AUGUSTA, Ga. - In a battle of the top two teams in the Peach Belt, Lander came out on fire Tuesday night, defeating Augusta 3-1. The win snapped a 10-game winning streak by the Jaguars and gave Lander the season series victory as well.
Trailing 8-7 in the first set, Madilyn Reed took a pass from Christina Aguayo for the kill to tie the match up and start a 5-0 run by the Bearcats to take a 13-8 lead. Augusta slowly battled back and eventually cut the Lander lead to 23-22, but a kill by Aguayo and a Jaguar attack error gave the Bearcats the 25-22 win.
In set number two, the Bearcats trailed 14-8, but they would score eight of the following ten points to tie the set at 16. Augusta responded to take a 23-20 lead. A kill by Aguayo ended a 6-1 run by the Bearcats to take the set 26-24 and a commanding 2-0 lead.
The two teams battled back and forth in the third set, with neither team leading by more than two points until Lander got back-to-back kills from Katie Miller and a service ace from Reed to take a 21-17 lead. The Jaguars wouldn't go away and battled back to take a 29-27 win.
Trailing 16-15 in the fourth set, Lander broke the serve with Augusta's ball-handling error to tie the set up at 16. Two kills by Miller and a kill by Maya Walker gave the Bearcats a 19-16 lead. Two kills by Annie Holesinger would give Lander the 25-23 win in the set and match.
Katie Miller and Christina Aguayo each had double-doubles to lead Lander. Miller had a game-high 17 kills with 15 digs, while Aguayo had 15 kills and 18 digs. Madilyn Reed also finished with a double-double, dishing out 51 assists to lead all players and recording 12 digs. Patricia Pantoja had 28 digs, and Annie Holesinger finished with 11 kills and four blocks. Maya Walker had 13 kills and three blocks.
Lander now awaits the release of the Peach Belt Championship bracket next week.
