Men's soccer blows by a foul heavy Georgia Southwestern squad - Wins 2-0 on Senior Day

GREENWOOD – The Lander men's soccer team defeated a chippy Georgia Southwestern squad 2-0 on Senior Day at Van Taylor Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Lander moves to 8-2-4 overall and 7-0-2 in the PBC while GSW drops to 5-6-3 overall and 2-5-3 in the PBC.

Lander held the Hurricanes in check the entire game, as GSW was held to just two shots the entire game with nothing going on goal.

The Bearcats scored both of their goals in the first half, with the first coming from senior Jonah Miller. After a shot from fellow senior Max Bolton was saved and deflected, Miller collected the rebound and fired home the game's opening goal in the 24th minute of play.
Marco Gueli was next to score for Lander, as he put away his eighth goal of the season to give Lander its 2-0 advantage in the 33rd minute of play. After getting a well placed through ball from Julien Sagnol, Gueli blasted a shot on his right foot that froze the Hurricanes' goalkeeper.
Lander finished the contest with 14 shots attempted and six going on target.

The Bearcats also withstood a barrage of fouls committed by the Hurricanes as the visitors were tagged with 21 fouls and four yellow cards through 90 minutes of action.

With the win against the Hurricanes, Lander has now allowed zero goals in the regular season against GSW.

Lorenzo Ferrari moves to 5-0-2 with the victory and records his fifth shutout of the season. Ferrari's five shutouts lead the PBC while Young Harris' and GSW's keepers are close behind with four each on the season.

The Bearcats will hit the road for North Georgia for their next match as the Blue and Gold head to Dahlonega, Ga., on October 19 for a 5 pm start.

Lander will also resume action against Clayton State on Monday, October 24 at 3 pm at Van Taylor Stadium. Lander and Clayton State originally played on October 12, but weather caused the game to be cut short with 24:09 remaining in the second half.
