Men's basketball falls to North Georgia 67-59 on the road

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Although improving in the second half, the Lander men's basketball team fell on the road to North Georgia 67-59.

Lander drops to 6-6 overall and 1-2 in the PBC while North Georgia moves to 9-4 and 2-2 in the PBC.

The Bearcats were led by Deandre Robinson's 17 points on the day. He shot 6-of-8 from the field and 5-of-7 from 3-point range. Robinson also finished with three rebounds and three steals. Dominic Stanford joined Robinson in double figures for scoring, as he ended the game with 14 points.

Lander was out rebounded 48-26 while allowing 14 offensive rebounds.

The Bearcats struggles against North Georgia for the first half, with the Nighthawks taking a 33-21 advantage after the first frame.

Lander shot 29.6 percent compared to North Georgia's 44.8 percent and was out rebounded 25-13.

Although allowing the first four points, Lander got on the scoreboard with a DaJuan Moorer layup with 17:16 left in the first. The Bearcats would get within two points of North Georgia on multiple occasions including a 3-pointer from Robinson with 12:32 in the first to make it a 14-12 North Georgia game. After letting the Nighthawks increase their lead, Lander got the game back within two points off a 3-pointer from Jared Sherfield to make it 23-21 North Georgia with 4:15 left in the first half. After that, North Georgia would go on an 8-0 run to finish the first half up 33-21.

Down by 18 with 14:36 in the second half, the Bearcats clawed their way back with a 15-4 run to get within seven points of the Nighthawks with 10:27 remaining to make it a 47-40 in favor of North Georgia. Lander went 6-for-8 on that run while going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. 

North Georgia would increase its lead to as many as 12 before Lander would get within seven points again off a converted long-range shot from Robinson to make it 59-52 with 2:13 remaining in the second half.

The Bearcats would get within six points off another 3-pointer from Robinson with 25 seconds remaining but were unable to get any closer to the Nighthawks.

The Bearcats will return home to Horne Arena for their next game, as they take on Augusta on January 12 at 7:30 pm.
