GREENWOOD, S.C. - LaRaymond Spivery tied a career-high with 19 points as the Lander Bearcats put five players in double figures, built a 19-point lead and held on to upset No. 12-ranked Augusta 88-81 in a Peach Belt Conference game Wednesday night at Horne Arena.
Lander improved to 7-6 overall and evened its PBC record at 2-2.
The Jaguars fell to 12-2, 2-2.
Spivery made five of seven shots from the floor and eight of 10 free throws to pace the Bearcats. He scored seven points in the last two minutes, including four of four free throws in the final 27 seconds.
Jared Sherfield added 13 points while leading Lander with eight rebounds and five assists. Sherfield made four of four free throws in the closing minutes.
Nigel Colvin,
Zane Rankin and
DaJuan Moorer added 13 points apiece for the Bearcats, who made 30 of 60 shots from the floor (50 percent).
Augusta's 7-foot-1 center Tyshaun Crawford led all scorers with 26 points and was the game's top rebounder with 10. He made seven of 10 shots from the floor and 12 of 17 free throws. But Lander's defense held their own led by
DeShundre Rucker.
Miguel Arnold scored 16 points for the Jaguars while Troy Cracknell and Darren Lucas-White added 14 apiece.
Sherfield made a back-door cut for a dunk, Rankin scored twice including a step-back 3-pointer, and Moorer also scored twice as Lander built an early 11-5 lead. The advantage grew to 18-8 with 12:34 to go after
Deandre Robinson's 3-pointer and Spivery's back-to-back driving layups.
After Lucas-White made a pair of free throws to cut Augusta's deficit to 21-16 with 10:21 left, the Bearcats went on a 13-2 run. Colvin hit a fade-away jumper and a 3-pointer, Moorer scored off a lob pass from Spivery, and then Sherfield and Colvin both hit 3-pointers from the right corner for a 34-18 lead with 7:45 to go.
Rankin's long 3-pointer several feet behind the line increased the Blue and Gold advantage to 41-22 inside the six-minute mark.
Robinson and Rankin each hit 3-pointers from the same left corner as the Bearcats maintained their double-digit lead at 51-34 with 1:19 until halftime.
Lander's advantage was 51-38 at halftime as Augusta stayed in the game thanks to Crawford making 12 of 15 free throws.
Spivery drove the baseline and then spun around and hit a mid-range jumper, giving the Bearcats a 55-40 advantage with 18 minutes left in the game.
The Jaguars twice got within nine at 55-46 after Arnold's pair of 3-pointers and 58-49 on Crawford's dunk. But a crucial 10-0 run gave Lander some breathing room again. Sherfield twice scored on put-backs including a dunk, Moorer was credited with a basket on goal-tending, Moorer also hit one of two free throws, and Spivery made a 3-pointer from the right corner for a 68-49 advantage with 11:05 to go. It matched the largest lead of the game for the Bearcats.
Tyree Myers hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key, pulling Augusta within 70-60 at the eight-minute mark.
After a long scoreless drought, Cracknell's 3-pointer from the left side cut the Jaguar deficit to 70-63 with 5:51 to go.
Moorer's driving layup ended Augusta's 11-2 run as Lander's lead was 72-63 with 5:30 left.
Crawford's put-back pulled the Jaguars within 76-70 at the three-minute mark.Â
Spivery made one of two free throws and after an Augusta unforced turnover, Sherfield made two of two from the stripe as the Blue and Gold led 79-70 with two minutes to go.
After the Jaguars missed a 3-point attempt, Spivery hit a mid-range jumper as the shot clock was about to expire giving Lander an 81-70 advantage with 1:22 left.
Daniel Allen's driving layup with 50 seconds left rallied Augusta within 82-76. But Sherfield made both free throws to extend the Blue and Gold lead to eight.
The Jaguars hit one 3-pointer that was reduced to two points when an official replay ruled Cracknell stepped on the line, and then they did hit a 3-pointer. But Spivery hit four of four free throws in the final 27 seconds to clinch the upset.
