Men's basketball defeats Clayton State 71-67 - Earns seventh consecutive home-court victory

GREENWOOD, S.C. - Jared Sherfield, Deandre Robinson and Dominic Stanford each hit clutch 3-pointers down the stretch as the Lander Bearcats held off Peach Belt Conference rival Clayton State 71-67 Saturday afternoon at Horne Arena for their seventh consecutive home win.
Lander improved to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in the Peach Belt. The Blue and Gold is 7-1 at home this season.
The Lakers fell to 6-7, 1-3.
Sherfield paced the Bearcats with 17 points, while Robinson added 12 points while sharing team-high honors in rebounding with six.
Stanford added 11 points for Lander while also grabbing six boards. Zane Rankin and DaJuan Moorer added 10 points apiece, Nigel Colvin contributed nine points and LaRaymond Spivery paced the Blue and Gold with six assists.
Kobie Johnson led Clayton State with 13 points, Jalen Shaw had 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds, Xavier Jones scored 11 points and Ricardo Lynch added 10 points and four assists.
The Bearcats began the game 4-for-13 from the floor and trailed 13-8 at the 13-minute mark. 
Lander responded to the slow start with an 18-2 run, including 13 unanswered points to take a 26-15 lead with 7:40 until halftime. The second of Robinson's two 3-pointers gave the Bearcats a 16-15 advantage, Sherfield made a contested turnaround layup high of the glass, Stanford followed up a missed fast-break layup with a basket, and Sherfield swished back-to-back 3-pointers from the top of the key.
Clayton State gained some ground over the rest of the first half, but Colvin's three 3-pointers kept Lander in front. The Blue and Gold led 37-31 at halftime.
The Lakers opened the second half with a 12-2 run, taking a 43-39 lead inside 17 minutes to go as Johnson and Williams scored five points apiece.
The Bearcats missed 18 of their first 21 shots of the second half and trailed 49-43 at the 11-minute mark. 
Lander scored eight consecutive points to regain the lead. Sherfield started the run with the team's first two free throws of the game and then Robinson hit back-to-back 3-pointers, putting the Bearcats on top 51-49 inside the 10-minute mark. Robinson's next 3-point attempt dropped halfway down and spun out.
Clayton State regained a 54-53 lead on a long 3-pointer by Williams. Rankin's consecutive buckets in the paint gave the Blue and Gold a 59-56 lead with 4:45 to go.
Williams made a trey to tie it, but Sherfield answered with a 3-pointer giving the Bearcats a 62-59 advantage with 3:36 left.
Shaw made two free throws and then gave the Lakers a 63-62 lead with 2:13 left on a dunk. But Stanford answered with a 3-pointer from the left corner, putting Lander back on top 65-63 with 1:54 left.
After Clayton State missed the front end of a one-and-one with 58 seconds left, Sherfield drove around the back side and made a left-handed layup giving the Bearcats a 67-63 edge with 40 seconds to go.
Williams made a layup for the Lakers. But Rankin and Sherfield each hit a pair of free throws in the final 11 seconds to clinch the Blue and Gold victory.
