Men's basketball continues road swing with a trip to Georgia Southwestern on Saturday

GREENWOOD – The Lander men's basketball team will look to rebound after losing to Columbus State with a trip to Georgia Southwestern on Saturday.

STORYLINES

  • The Bearcats are coming off an 86-66 loss at Columbus State on Wednesday.
  • The 20-point defeat was the biggest margin of defeat on the season along with the most points allowed.
  • Jared Sherfield and Nigel Colvin led the Bearcats with 16 points each. Sherfield also added in nine rebounds and three assists.
  • Lander got behind early with a 10-of-27 shooting first half, as it trailed Columbus State 51-26 at the half.
  • The Bearcats scored 40 in the second half but were unable to outpace the Cougars. Lander shot 48.5 percent from the field in the second half. 
  • Lander and Columbus State went 1-1 in the regular season.
  • Lander will play two more games in the Peach State in three days. The Bearcats will take on Georgia Southwestern on Saturday before traveling to Clayton State on Monday.
  • GSW is currently 4-10 overall and 0-6 in conference play.
  • Coming in on a five-game losing streak, the Hurricanes most recently fell victim to No. 17 Augusta on January 19 76-65.
  • The last win for GSW came against Middle Georgia State from the NAIA. The Hurricanes defeated the Knights 81-64 at the Strom Dome on December 31.
  • The Bearcats currently sit in seventh in the PBC with a 2.5 game advantage over Clayton State, who sits with a 1-4 conference record.
  • GSW and Young Harris are both winless in conference play, as the Hurricanes are 0-6 and YHC is 0-7.
  • The Bearcats still hold one of the conference's best scoring defenses, with Lander holding opponents to 67.7 points per game. GSW is allowing 75.2 points per game.
  • Sherfield is seventh in the PBC for total assists with 51 and is tied for ninth in assists per game with 3.4.
  • DaJuan Moorer is tied for third in the PBC for blocks per game with 1.3 and fourth in total blocks with 18.
  • Donte Tatum leads the Hurricanes in scoring with 16.9 points per game. Devon Higgs is the team's leader in rebounds with 7.4 per game. Kahlon Whitley leads GSW in assists with 3.9 per game.
  • Lander travels to Clayton State on January 24 to round out the three-game road trip before returning to Horne Arena to host Georgia College on January 26.
