Men's basketball looks for perfect week with Clayton State coming to Horne Arena on Saturday

GREENWOOD – The Lander men's basketball team will look to close the week out with another win as they host the Clayton State Lakers at Horne Arena at 3:30 pm on Saturday.

STORYLINES

  • Lander is coming off an 88-81 over No. 12/13 Augusta at Horne Arena on Wednesday.
  • LaRaymond Spivery tied a career-high in scoring with 19 points to lead the Bearcats in scoring.
  • Jared Sherfield, Zane Rankin, DaJuan Moorer and Nigel Colvin all joined Spivery in double figures in scoring with 13 points each.
  • Before beating Augusta, the last time Lander defeated a top-25 team was on February 6, 2019 when they took down No. 18 UNC Pembroke at Horne Arena.
  • Marquel Wiggins led the Bearcats with 18 points and had three blocks. DeShundre Rucker had eight points, 10 rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block.
  • After Spivery's 19 points, the Bearcats have been led in scoring by seven different players this season. Colvin leads the team with three games as the leading scorer. Stanford, Rankin, Moorer, Jared Sherfield and DeAndre Robinson are all tied with two games and Spivery rounds the group out.
  • Along with seeing numerous players lead the team in scoring on a nightly basis, the Bearcats have compiled eight games this season that featured four or more players score 10 or more points.
  • The win against Augusta was the first win of the season that didn't come by 10 or more points.

  • The Bearcats are also ranked nationally in numerous categories. Lander is currently 32nd in FG defense, 39th in 3PT FG made per game with 9.7, 43rd in scoring defense, 46th in FT percentage, 47th in total 3PT FG made and 61st in defensive rebounds per game.
  • The Bearcats currently rank third in scoring defense in the PBC with 66.4 points allowed per game. They trail Augusta and North Georgia who lead the conference with just 63.4 points allowed per game.
  • Lander is also second in the PBC for FT percentage with a 75.3 conversion rate. Columbus State leads the conference, making 78.5 of its free throws.
  • Lander currently has three players averaging double figures in scoring this season. Robinson leads the way with 12.8 points per game while Colvin and Dominic Stanford round the list out with 10.6 and 10.0 points per game.
  • In the four PBC games played, Stanford leads the team with 12 points per game.
  • Sherfield leads the Bearcats in rebounds per game (5.9) and assists per game (3.4). He also leads the team in total rebounds with 77 and total assists with 44 this season.
  • Martin Vogts leads the way with 1.5 steals per game while Moorer leads the team with 1.3 blocks per game.
  • Only playing the Lakers once last season due to COVID restrictions, the Bearcats came away with a 91-73 victory at Horne Arena.
  • Deon Berrien and Moorer both scored 20+ points against the Lakers, with the pair also recording 11 rebounds each.
  • The Bearcats dominated down low, scoring 50 points in the paint against the Lakers last time facing them.
  • Clayton State comes into this contest with a 6-6 overall record and a 1-2 record in the PBC.
  • After defeating Young Harris 85-69 to begin PBC play on January 5, the Lakers have lost back-to-back games to Columbus State and North Georgia.
  • The Lakers have played a pair of nationally-ranked opponents, with losses to then-No. 17 Lincoln Memorial and No. 23 Valdosta State.
  • The Lakers are averaging 75.8 points per game while allowing 76.3 per game.
  • Clayton State has a -1.1 turnover margin compared to the Bearcats 0.7.
  • Four players for Clayton State are averaging double figures in scoring this season. Ricardo Lynch leads the way with 14.6 points per game with Jalen Shaw close behind 14.4.
  • Shaw is also the leading rebounder with 7.5 boards per game. Kobie Johnson leads the way with 3.0 assists per game.
  • In their last game against North Georgia on Wednesday, Lynch led the way with 14 points. He also had three rebounds, one assist and one block. Shaw came close to a double-double with 11 points and seven rebounds. He also had one steal.
  • Lander is looking to extend its current winning streak against Clayton State to four in a row, which would tie the longest winning streak from 1990-2002.
