Men's basketball takes on nationally ranked Augusta this Wednesday

GREENWOOD – The Lander men's basketball team will look to end its two-game losing skid as it hosts nationally-ranked Augusta at Horne Arena on Wednesday.

STORYLINES

  • Lander is coming off a 67-59 loss at North Georgia on January 8.
  • The Bearcats have lost their last two conference games.
  • DeAndre Robinson led the Bearcats with 17 points against the Nighthawks. He went 6-of-8 from the field while also going 5-of-7 from 3-point range.
  • Dominic Stanford joined Robinson in double figures for scoring with 14 points.
  • Lander shot 8-of-27 from the field in the first after falling behind NGU 33-21. The Bearcats improved in the second half, going 15-of-32 from the field in the second half. 
  • Lander was able to get the game to within two points in the first half when Jared Sherfield hit a 3-pointer to make it 23-21 North Georgia, but that would be the closest the Bearcats would come to tying the contest.
  • This was the first loss for Lander that didn't come by five or fewer. The Bearcats still have yet to lose by 10 or more points this season.
  • Sherfield is currently 10th in the PBC for total assists with 37.
  • DaJuan Moorer is currently fourth in the PBC for total blocked shots (15) and blocks per game (1.4).
  • Martin Vogts is tied for ninth in the PBC in total steals with 18.
  • Nationally, the Bearcats are 23rd in FG defense, 33rd in scoring defense and 38th in 3-pointers made per game.
  • Along with Robinson (14.2) and Stanford (10.3), Nigel Colvin (10.4) is among three Bearcats to average double figures in scoring this season.
  • Sherfield leads the Bearcats in total rebounds (69) and rebounds per game (5.8). He also leads the Blue and Gold in assists with 37.
  • Lander will look to snap a four-game losing streak against the Jaguars. Lander lost both contests against Augusta by a combined seven points. That includes a double-overtime defeat at Horne Arena the last time out against the Jaguars that saw Lander fall 99-97.
  • Lander had five players in double figures in scoring in that game.
  • Sherfield led the Bearcats with 28 points along with adding in four rebounds and one steal. He went 8-of-13 from the field and 7-of-11 from beyond the arc.
  • The Jaguars are currently 12-1 overall and 2-1 in the PBC this season.
  • Augusta is currently on a three-game winning streak after beginning conference action with a 73-62 loss at Columbus State.
  • The Jaguars most recently defeated Young Harris 112-58 on January 8.
  • Miguel Arnold and Troy Cracknell both scored over 20 points in that contest.
  • In total, six players for Augusta scored 10 or more points against Young Harris.
  • Augusta was ranked 12th in last week's NABC poll while being ranked 15th in last week's D2SIDA Poll. The Jaguars are now 12th in the NABC poll and have moved up to 13th in the D2SIDA poll.
  • Augusta has four players averaging 10 or more points per game so far this season. They are currently led by Arnold's 15.3 points per game. Arnold is currently eighth among PBC scorers this season for points per game and sixth with 199 points scored this season.
  • Tyshaun Crawford who averages 13.9 points per game is eighth in total points in the PBC with 181.
  • Crawford is also fourth in the PBC for rebounds per game with 7.7 and third in the PBC for total rebounds with 100. He is just one of three players with 100 or more rebounds so far this season. Crawford is also second in the PBC for total blocks (27) and blocks per game (2.1).
  • Tyree Myers leads the Jaguars in assists with 4.4 per game and 57 on the season.
  • The Bearcats stay at Horne Arena to close the week out as they host Clayton State on January 15 for a 3:30 pm start.
