CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Lander volleyball team started the 2021 season off in style, as they picked up a pair of wins over Lees-McRae and Queens to start the year 2-0.
In his first season as the head coach of the Bearcats, head coach Jeff Reynolds picked up his first two wins leading the Blue and Gold.
The first game of the day saw Lander face Lees-McRae. The Bearcats would take three straight sets, winning 25-16,25-18,25-23. Totaling 41 kills on the day, Christina Aguayo set a career-high for kills with 21 against the Bobcats. Lander hit .156 as a team while Lees-McRae hit just .033.
Madilyn Reed had 84 assists between the two games while Daria De Carvalho Peixe led the Bearcats in blocks for the day with a combined 11.
The two sides were inches apart in the first set until Lander was caught fire and went on an 8-1 run up 17-15 to clinch the first set. Set no. 2 saw the Blue and Gold pace the Bobcats for most of the second frame, leading by as many as nine.
Lees McRae got the jump on Lander in the third set, with the Bobcats establishing an initial 6-2 edge. That would quickly vanish, with the Bearcats going on a 5-1 run to see the match tied at 7-7. Down 18-16, Lander was able to gain momentum with a three-point swing to take a 19-18 advantage before trading points with the Bobcats the rest of the match to arrive at an eventual 25-23 final score.
Although falling 25-18 in the first set to Queens, the Bearcats showed great resolve, winning 25-21 and 25-23 in the next two sets to flip the script and take a 2-1 edge.
Aguayo led the Bearcats in kills yet again in the second game of the day, this time with 20. Reed upped her 31 assists from the first game and assited on 53 points against the Royals.
Lander hit .111 while Queens hit .098.
The host Royals weren't done yet, as they forced a fifth set with a 25-18 win.
After the two sides exchanged points to see the score tied 2-2; Lander went on the offensive with an 8-2 run that saw four kills from Sydney Bellamy and the Bearcats up 10-4. The closest the Royals would get to the Bearcats would be four points when Lander led 11-7.
Lander concludes action in the Queens Fall Classic tomorrow with matches against Wingate at 12:15 pm and Elizabeth State at 4:45 pm.
