CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After going 2-0 on the first day of the Queens Fall Classic, the Lander Bearcats went 0-2 to close out the classic with losses to Wingate and Elizabeth City.
Lander drops to 2-2 on the season with the conclusion of action in Charlotte.
The Bearcats were unable to weather the storm brought by the Wingate Bulldogs, losing in three sets 25-17,25-17, 25-21.
"We knew Wingate was going to be a tough opponent. They have set the standard in our region for all other teams to achieve. That game was a very valuable learning experience for us." Said head coach Jeff Reynolds.
Maya Walker led the Bearcats in kills against Wingate with 12, Madilyn Reed was the leader in assists with 14 and Patricia Pantoja led the Bearcats in digs with eight.
Playing in their second five-set match of the tournament, the Bearcats were unfortunately on the losing end against Elizabeth City in a 3-2 loss.
After dropping the first set 25-17, Lander took the next two sets 25-22, 25-20 and looked to be in a position to earn their third win of the season.
"This evening's game against Elizabeth City State was a bit disappointing. We simply failed to execute in various phases of the game. When our passing was off, we couldn't get much going. When we fixed that up a bit, our defense struggled a bit," said Reynolds. "We just weren't able to maintain much consistency throughout the match. If we do this right, we'll be able to take away some valuable information from our performance this weekend and use it to make improvements where we need to improve."
That would not be the case for the Blue and Gold, as they fell 25-22 and 15-12 in the final two sets.
Christina Aguayo and Walker were in double figures for kills with 16 and 13 respectively. Pantoja led Lander once again in digs, this time with 22. Aguayo, Walker and Daria De Carvalho Peixe all had a team-high two blocks each.
Lander takes the short trip to Due West to battle Erskine on Tuesday in preparation for the Pacer Invitational.
