GREENWOOD – The Lander men's soccer team continued its dominance at home as it took down Clayton State 4-0 Wednesday evening.
Lander moves to 6-3-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the PBC while Clayton State drops to 4-4-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the PBC.
Since losing to Anderson 3-1 on October 16, 2019, the Bearcats have gone 11-0-1 at Van Taylor Stadium. At home this season, Lander is 3-0 and has outscored opponents 14-0.
Lander has now won the last 11 contests against Clayton State, with the last loss coming in a 2-0 contest on October 11, 2014.
The Lakers got plenty of early chances in the first half, with the Blue and Gold bailed out by some timely fouls and quick reflexes from Jacob Withers who made his first start of the season.
After settling things down, Lander finally gained some traction as they found the back of the net in the 39th minute of play.
Max Bolton scored his first goal of the season after Marco Gueli flicked a ball to him into the box and a quick shot to the right side of the goal sealed the deal.
Gueli, who earned three assists on the night, wasn't done filling out the stat sheet. Down the far sideline, Gueli found Kevin Rubaszewski who took a pass in stride and fired a beautiful strike for his second goal of the season in the 41st minute of play.
The Bearcats would take a 2-0 lead into the half after taking seven shots to the eight attempted by Clayton State. Withers was busy in the first frame, as the veteran keeper made four saves.
Lander would resume its scoring in the 66th minute after Tom Marriott curled an expertly paced free-kick for his 10th goal of the season. Marriott has scored a team-leading 10 goals in just nine games this season.
Bolton would get his second goal of the night and season after Marriott crossed a pass to Gueli who in turn would slide a pass over to Bolton to fire into an open net to give Lander the 4-0 victory.
Withers earned his first victory of the season after making five saves. He now has 24 career shutouts, tying him with Garrett Daum for the second-most career shutouts in Bearcat history.
The Bearcats have another home contest coming up, as the Hurricanes of Georgia Southwestern come to Greenwood on Saturday.
