Bearcats fall to Pacers in five set thriller

GREENWOOD, S.C. - USC-Aiken squeaked by Lander 3-2 Wednesday night in women's volleyball play.  

A kill by Daria De Carvalho Peixe started the game off and gave Lander the lead, then an attack error by the Pacers would make it 2-0. The Bearcats continued to hold a narrow lead throughout the early part of the first set, but Aiken scored three straight points to take their first lead of the match 8-7. With the score tied at eight, Lander outscored the Pacers 12-6 to take a commanding 19-14 lead. Following an Aiken timeout, Aiken battled back to make it a 21-19 match. A kill by Christina Aguayo stopped the Pacer run and gave the Bearcats the momentum as they closed out the first set 25-19.

The Pacers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second set, but a block by DeCarvalho Peixe and Patricia Pantoja stopped the Aiken run and made it a 3-1 game. After an attack error by the Pacers, DeCarvalho Peixe took a pass from Madilyn Reed for the kill and tied the game at three. The Pacers responded with a 7-1 run to take a 10-4 lead. Aiken led by as many as ten, but the Bearcats would not go away, scratching and clawing their way back, but the Pacers took the second set 25-16.  

In the third set, both teams battled, with neither team leading by more than three points. After the Pacers made it a 24-23 game, the Bearcats got kills from DeCarvalho Peixe and Nadia Carter to win the set and take a 2-1 lead. 

The two teams continued their back and forth battle in the fourth set. The Pacers took a 25-17 victory to force a fifth and deciding set.  

In the fifth set, Aiken took an early 5-2 lead, but Lander would battle back to tie the game at seven. Aiken responded with three straight points to make it a 10-7 game. The Bearcats would keep fighting to cut the deficit to one, but Aiken would hold on to win 15-10 and take the victory. 

Christina Aguayo had another double-double with 17 kills and 16 digs to lead the Bearcats. Maya Walker added 16 kills, while Madilyn Reed dished out 43 assists, and Patricia Pantoja had 20 digs.
