FLORENCE, S.C. – The No. 10 Lander men's soccer team took a 3-2 win in overtime against Francis Marion to start the season behind Tom Marriott's three-goal performance.
Lander begins the season 1-0-0 overall while Francis Marion begins their season 0-1-0.
The Patriots were the first to strike, putting away the first goal of the game during the fifth minute of action. It would remain a 1-0 game for FMU heading into halftime.
Marriott and the Bearcats would respond in the 65th minute to tie the game, with the reigning PBC Player of The Year putting away a shot off a nifty back pass from Luke Jordan to make it 1-1.
FMU would strike once more in regulation, as the Patriots took a 2-1 advantage in the 80th minute.
Lander found hope once again, with Marriott striking home the equalizer with exactly six minutes remaining in the half.
Neither side was able to strike in the first overtime period, leading to even more added time. In the 102nd minute of action, Marriott would receive a pass from Max Bolton to push the Bearcats past the Patriots with his third goal of the game.
The Bearcats make their way back to Florence to battle Chowan in a neutral site game on Sunday.
