Box Score GREENWOOD – After battling non-stop with the Francis Marion Patriots in the PBC semifinals, the No. 3 Lander men's soccer team fell in penalty kicks 5-4 to end its season.
Lander concludes its season with a record of 8-0-1 and 8-0-0 in the PBC while Francis Marion Moves to 4-3-3 and 3-3-2 in the PBC.
Although neither side was able to do any damage in the first half, Lander put four-of-five shots on net in the first frame of action.
Francis Marion was able to strike first, as a free kick taken in the 49th minute bounced off a Bearcats and rolled into the net to give the Patriots a 1-0 advantage.
Marco Gueli and Harry Bircumshaw scored within seven minutes of each other as the pair scored in the 61st and 68th minute of action to give the Bearcats a 2-1 edge.
A late goal in the 75th minute for the Patriots brought the game tied once more at 2.
Neither side was able to do much in overtime, with each team attempting one shot.
Lander went 4-of-5 in the shootout, missing its initial attempt. Francis Marion found the back of the net on all five of its attempts to end the Bearcats season.
Francis Marion will take on Flagler in the PBC Championship. The Saints also had to battle through PKs, winning 6-5 against Young Harris earlier in the day.
