Box Score GREENWOOD – The Lander volleyball team earned a season sweep over Young Harris on Tuesday with a 3-1 victory over the Mountain Lions in Finis Horne Arena.
Christina Aguayo led all players with 16 kills while Alexa Barral tallied 11 kills while hitting .562 on the evening. Madilyn Reed recorded 48 assists and Maddie Reed finished with 13 digs.
The Bearcats fell behind 18-15 in set one, but scored seven of the next 11 points to pull even. Aguayo buried a kill in the near corner to tie the score at 23-23 and a Mountain Lion error gave Lander set point. Young Harris rallied to take the next two points and earn their first set point before kills from Maya Walker and Barral put Lander up 26-25. Barral blocked the ensuing Mountain Lion attack to give the Bearcats the first set of the night.
In the second set, Lander jumped out to a 7-3 lead before Young Harris rattled off six consecutive points. From there, neither team led by more than two until a 5-0 Mountain Lion run made the score 19-16. With Young Harris leading 22-18, Walker registered a kill and Maddie Moss fired back-to-back aces to pull the Bearcats within a point. However, Lander could pull no closer as the Mountain Lions hung on for a 25-23 set win.
The Bearcats opened set three on a 19-3 run, highlighted by six service aces. Lander stormed to a 25-7 win, the largest margin of victory in a set for Lander since a 25-7 third set win over UNC Pembroke on Sept. 15, 2017.
In the final set of the night, Lander used an 8-0 spurt to break open a 12-11 score and cruise to a 25-14 set win and the victory
Lander travels to Augusta on Friday for a 6:00 p.m. conference match.
