Box Score GREENWOOD – The Lander women's soccer team used first-half goals from Mary Moosbrugger and Reyna Bueno to erase an early deficit and secure a 3-1 win over Francis Marion on Monday night at Van Taylor Stadium.
Francis Marion took the initial lead when Valentina Restrepo wove down the field and found the back of the net at the 11:33 mark. Lander would not trail for long, as Mary Moosbrugger stole possession and beat the Patriot keeper in the upper-left corner just 33 seconds later to tie the match.
The score remained knotted until the 31st minute, when Brennen McCarthy's shot was punched off the crossbar and fell free on the end line. Reyna Bueno managed to fight through a defender and punch the ball though to give the Bearcats a 2-1 lead.
Lander tacked on an insurance goal in the 80th minute as Gracie Beeson took a pass just outside the box from Moosbrugger and rifled a shot just under the bar.
The Bearcats outshot the Patriots 12-8 and held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Sarah Owen finished with one save for the Bearcats, while Beeson led the offensive attack with five shots.
Lander will return to action on Thursday with a road match at Flagler at 12:00 p.m.
