Box Score 2 GREENWOOD – The Lander softball team used four home runs in game one of its doubleheader against Walsh to earn a split with the Cavaliers, winning 7-2 and falling 8-3 at Doug Spears Field.
Lander (9-5) trailed early in game one, but took the lead when Haven Pesce blasted a two-run homer, her second of the season. Walsh (2-4) used a solo shot of its own to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the third, but Lander's bats came to life again in the bottom of the fourth as Morgan Watson launched her first home run of the year, a two-run shot to put the Bearcats up 4-2. Logan Coward followed with a solo homer in the next at-bat and Watson put the finishing touches on Lander's win with another two-run blast in the bottom of the sixth.
Barbara Cook (4-0) went the distance in the circle for Lander, striking out nine and allowing just one earned run on seven hits with no walks.
The Cavaliers built a 5-0 lead in game two before a pair of RBI doubles from Bridgett Tierney and Delaney Guerrero cut the deficit to 5-2. Walsh responded with a three-run sixth and Madison Ackerman's RBI groundout in the seventh would be all the Bearcats could muster as the Cavaliers hung on for the 8-3 win.
Eliza Gonzalez (1-3) took the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and a walk.
Lander faces USC Aiken in a non-conference doubleheader on Mar. 13 at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. at Doug Spears Field.
