GREENWOOD – The Lander women's lacrosse team fell to Young Harris 23-10 as the Bearcats battled in their first Gulf South Conference march in program history.

Lander drops to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the GSC while Young Harris moves to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in the GSC.

Junior Melissa Clapsaddle led the Bearcats in scoring with five goals. Clapsaddle also put seven of her eight shots on goal and won five draw controls.

Lander began the scoring with a goal from sophomore Emma Arifin with 25:20 remaining in the first half to take an early 1-0 lead.

The Mountain Lions would respond with six unanswered goals to take a 6-1 lead with 11:40 remaining. Clapsaddle got Lander back on the board with 9:52 to make it a 6-2 contest. Two more goals would come from sophomore Emmy Peterson and Clapsaddle while Young Harris would score three more to make it a 9-4 at the half.

The Mountain Lions went on the attack in the second half with 14 goals coming for the Purple and Grey.

The Bearcats got within three goals of Young Harris after scoring three of the first four goals in the second half. Freshman Madeleine McNeer began the half with a goal with 26:36 remaining while Clapsaddle and sophomore Lauren Fallow both netted goals to make it a 10-7 game.

Junior Brenah Sarell made 13 saves in 41:18 of action while freshman Taryn Samons made five saves in 18:42 of action

Lander will host Lee on April 3 at Van Taylor Stadium for its next Gulf South Conference match.
