Box Score 2 GREENWOOD – The Lander softball team came away with a pair of wins over visiting Lees-McRae on Tuesday at Doug Spears Field.
With the wins, the Bearcats advance to 13-7 overall while Lees-McRae drops to 5-21 overall.
Lander took game one by a score of 3-1 thanks to stellar pitching from redshirt sophomore Barbara Cook who went seven innings while only allowing two hits while striking out four.
The Bearcats took the lead in the second inning. Redshirt sophomore Morgan Watson started the inning off with a double before moving to third on a passed ball. She eventually came around to score on a sac fly to center field from redshirt junior Alana Frye to make it 1-0 Lander. A fielder choice brought home the second run later in the second to make it a 2-0 lead for the Bearcats. In the bottom of the third, redshirt sophomore Shannon Antonini would come home to score on a fielder choice to put the Bearcats up 3-0.
An RBI double in the fifth inning would bring home the lone run for Lees-McRae, as the Bobcats would not be able to muster up anything else.
The Bearcats saw a surge in their offense in game two, defeating the Bobcats 7-2 to clinch the sweep.
Redshirt junior Liz Gollin went all seven innings while allowing just four hits, two runs while striking out 10 Bobcats.
Lander began the scoring early, as in the bottom of the first freshman Shelby Davies scored two runs on a single. Making it to third off a single from Watson, Davies would successfully steal home to give the Bearcats an early 3-0 advantage. Watson would strike again for the Bearcats, this time with a home run to center field in the third to make it a 4-0 ball game for Lander.
Lees-McRae got on the board off an RBI single in the fifth to creep toward the Bearcats.
Lander would respond with three runs of its own in the bottom of the fifth, with two runs coming home to score off errors while the other came across on a ground out to make it 7-1.
The Bobcats would score one run in the sixth off a solo shot to center field to make it a 7-2 contest but were unable to score any more runs.
Lander is on the road for its next contest as it travels to face North Georgia on March 27.
