Box Score GREENWOOD – The Lander men's soccer team claimed its 10th regular-season PBC title as it defeated USC Aiken 6-1 at Van Taylor Stadium Tuesday evening.
Lander continues its perfect season as it moves to 7-0-0 in the PBC while USC Aiken drops to 0-4-0 in the PBC.
The Bearcats ran circles around the Pacers, attempting 26 total shots while putting second on target. Aiken only managed two shots the entire game.
Senior Tom Marriott started the scoring in the fourth minute of play, putting away a shot off a pass from freshman Marco Gueli to give Lander a 1-0 lead. The Bearcats struck again in the 18th minute as sophomore Max McNulty tucked away a goal from Gueli to push Lander ahead 2-0. After being fouled in the box, sophomore Max Bolton was awarded a penalty kick. Although he had the shot saved, he followed up with a quick blast that found the back of the net to make it 3-0 Bearcats in the 25th minute.
Lander would see another opportunity to capitalize on a penalty kick in the 27th minute, with Marriott striking home the fourth goal of the half for the Blue and Gold.
USC Aiken would temporarily interrupt the Bearcats scoring with a converted penalty kick in the 39th minute to make it a 4-1 game.
Neither side was able to score again until the 84th minute when sophomore Carson Dinger scored off a pass from junior Aaron Kirkland who was called up from the developmental squad. McNulty scored again in the 89th minute of action off a pass from sophomore Grant Wagner to give Lander its 6-1 victory.
Freshman Simon Reithmeir picked up the win in his collegiate debut for the Bearcats.
The Bearcats are back in action on April 1 as they host Clayton State to conclude the regular season before preparing for the PBC tournament.
