Box Score 2 GREENWOOD – The Lander softball team scored the first seven runs of game two against Emmanuel and nearly got a no-hitter in the circle from Liz Gollin as the Bearcats split with the Lions on Thursday at Doug Spears Field.
Emmanuel (3-7) scored the first three runs of game one, but the Bearcats used a two-out rally in the third to tie the game as Rylee Omahen singled home Shannon Antonini and Bridgett Tierney scored on a wild pitch. After Delaney Guerrero walked, the Bearcat second baseman got caught in a rundown between first and second and stayed alive long enough to allow Omahen to cross the plate with the tying run.
The Lions reclaimed the lead with two runs of their own in the top of the fifth, aided by a pair of Lander errors. Logan Coward narrowed the deficit to 5-4 with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, but the Bearcats left two aboard in the frame and went down in order in the bottom of the seventh.
Eliza Gonzalez (1-2) took the loss for Lander after allowing two earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts in 5.0 innings.
Lander (6-4) struck first in game two as Haven Pesce doubled home Emily Campbell, then came around to score on a double off the bat of Antonini to put the Beacats ahead 2-0. The Bearcats extended the lead in the bottom of the fifth as the first two batters of the inning reached base. Guerrero dropped a bunt down the third base line that was thrown away, allowing Tierney and Antonini to score. Three batters later, Emily Campbell roped a double into the left-center gap to plate Guerrero and give Lander a 5-0 lead. Antonini mashed her third home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 7-0.
Emmanuel managed to spoil Gollin's (2-2) no-hit bid with four hits and two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Gollin struck out four and walked three in the win.
Lander hosts Converse on Mar. 2 in a non-conference doubleheader at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.
