Box Score 2 GREENWOOD – The Lander softball team got a five-inning one-hitter from Barbara Cook in the circle as the Bearcats defeated Chowan 9-1 in game two of Sunday's doubleheader at Doug Spears Field. The Hawks won game one, 6-3.
Lander (3-3) broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning in game one when Shelby Davies drove in Jillian Terpenning with an RBI single to put the Bearcats up 1-0. A wild pitch and an error in the top of the sixth gave Chowan a 3-1 lead, but Cook blasted a solo homer in the bottom of the inning to bring Lander within a run. Chowan used a three-run homer in the top of the seventh to make the score 6-2 and a Delaney Guerrero RBI single in the bottom of the seventh was all Lander could muster as the Bearcats dropped the first game of the day.
Liz Gollin (0-2) allowed four earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and three walks in 6.1 innings of work.
Lander jumped all over the Hawks early in game two when Guerrero laced a two-run triple and Cook followed with an RBI groundout to give the Bearcats a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Chowan's lone hit of the contest came on a solo homer in the top of the second, but Shannon Antonini led off the bottom of the second with her own round-tripper as Lander extended the lead to 4-1. Kyrah Phelix's RBI groundout in the bottom of the fourth put the Bearcats up 5-1. In the bottom of the fifth, Emily Campbell singled home Terpenning and scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly from Alana Frye. Antonini followed with an RBI double to plate Bricelin Balcer and Hannah Medley ended the game with a triple to bring Antonini home.
Cook (2-0) baffled the Hawks through 5.0 innings, allowing only a solo home run and striking out seven batters without issuing a walk.
Lander hosts Emmanuel on Feb. 26 in a doubleheader at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. at Doug Spears Field.
