GREENWOOD, S.C. -
Nigel Colvin made seven of Lander's 17 3-pointers and scored 25 points, leading the Bearcats to a 93-64 victory over Johnson C. Smith in the Lander Classic Saturday afternoon at Horne Arena.
Lander used a 24-1 run that bridged the two halves and then put the game away with a late 18-3 run.
Lander improved to 3-4 on the season and will host Livingstone College Sunday at 2 in the final round of the Lander Classic at Horne Arena.
The Golden Bulls fell to 2-4. It was the first meeting between the two schools in men's basketball.
Colvin, who scored 27 points in the season opener on Nov. 12, made seven of 10 shots from behind the arc and eight of 12 overall to lead the Bearcats Saturday.
Zane Rankin added 16 points for Lander, making five of nine from behind the arc. The Bearcats made 17 of 34 3-point attempts (50 percent) and 33 of 60 overall (55 percent).
Navaughn Maise made six of seven shots from the floor and finished with 13 points for Lander.
Jared Sherfield added nine points while leading the Bearcats with five assists.
DaJuan Moorer paced Lander with six rebounds.
Xavier Jones had an outstanding game for Johnson C. Smith, making nine of 11 shots from the floor including all six attempts from behind the arc to finish with 24 points. Augustine Ominu scored 12 points while leading the Golden Bulls with seven rebounds. Stephen Sherrill added 10 points for the visitors.
Johnson C. Smith made 11 of 21 from behind the arc (52 percent) and 23 of 53 overall (43 percent).
Lander made its first five 3-point shot attempts, with Colvin hitting three and Rankin knocking down a pair as the Bearcats led 18-10 with 13:45 to go.
The Golden Bulls scored eight unanswered points to cut a 20-10 deficit to 20-18. But
Dominic Stanford hit a 3-pointer and added a three-point play on a layup, and Colvin nailed his fourth 3 of the half to extend Lander's lead to 29-20 with 8:30 left.
Sherrill and Jones made 3-pointers to help rally Johnson C. Smith within 31-30 with just over five minutes to go.
But Lander outscored the Golden Bulls 16-1 over the final 4:46 of the half to lead 47-31 at the break. Rankin and Colvin each hit 3-pointers to start the run while Maise scored three baskets in the paint, including a three-point play with a second left on a layup off a nice entry pass from
Martin Vogts.
The Bearcats scored the first eight points of the second half for a 55-31 lead with 18 minutes to go, extending their overall run to 24-1. Rankin found Maise inside for a layup, and Stanford and Rankin hit 3-pointers.
Moorer's three-point play gave Lander a 64-38 lead with 14:15 left. But the Bearcats committed four turnovers over the next two minutes as Johnson C. Smith scored 11 unanswered points to pull within 64-49 on Justin Day's 3-pointer with 12:47 to go.
Leading 67-53 at the midway point of the second half, Lander put the game away with an 18-3 run. Colvin led the way with two more 3-pointers, a driving layup and a pair of free throws while Sherfield added a driving dunk as the lead grew to 85-56 with 4:15 to go.
Sebastian Augustave's 3-pointer increased the Bearcat lead to 88-61 with 1:27 left. And then
Xavier Allen and
Maison Hall closed the scoring for Lander with the first points of their Blue and Gold careers as Allen hit a jumper and Hall banked in a 3 from the right side.
