GREENWOOD, S.C. - DaJuan Moorer scored 19 points and the Lander Bearcats had a big advantage at the free-throw line, beating Livingstone College 75-64 in the second round of the Lander Classic Sunday afternoon at Horne Arena.
The Bearcats won both their games at the Lander Classic and now have three consecutive victories, improving to 4-4 on the season. The Bearcats beat Johnson C. Smith 93-64 on Saturday.
The Blue Bears fell to 3-2.
Moorer made nine of 12 shots from the floor to pace Lander.
Dominic Stanford and
Zane Rankin added 13 points apiece for the Bearcats while
Martin Vogts added 10 points.
Jared Sherfield paced Lander with nine rebounds and five assists while
Navaughn Maise had two blocked shots.
Navar Elmore led Livingstone with 17 points while Darrus Maddox added 12 points.
The Bearcats made 17 of 19 free throws (90 percent) while the Blue Bears hit only six of 18 (33 percent).
After making 17 3-pointers on Saturday, Lander made only six of 24 attempts from behind the arc on Sunday (25 percent). But Livingstone was only two of 21 (10 percent) from 3-point range.
After
Nigel Colvin's 3-pointer gave Lander an early 5-2 lead, the Bearcats missed their next 10 shots from the floor and trailed 9-5. Moorer's basket at the 11:02 mark ended the scoreless streak but Lander continued to trail.
A basket by Deshone Hicks gave Livingstone a 20-15 lead with 8:37 left in the first half. But the Bearcats scored 11 unanswered points to take a 26-20 advantage as Moorer scored inside, Rankin and Vogts knocked down 3-pointers, and Moorer converted a three-point play. The Blue and Gold would not trail again.
Stanford's basket with 2:16 left gave Lander a 32-25 lead. But De'Marr McRae's put-back in the final seconds pulled the Blue Bears within 33-32 at halftime.
O'Koye Parker's basket cut Livingstone's deficit to 45-42 with 12:18 to go. The Bearcats responded with an 11-4 run to build a double-digit lead at 56-46 just inside the eight-minute mark when Rankin made a 3-pointer, and Colvin and Moorer each scored twice.
Stanford's dunk pushed Lander's advantage to 60-48 with 6:11 left. Rankin's free throws gave the Bearcats a 66-56 lead with 2:08 to go.
Maise's alley-oop pass to Stanford for a dunk pushed Lander's advantage to 68-57 with 1:40 left, putting an exclamation point on the victory.Â
