Top seeded Flagler holds off upset minded Bearcats 3-2

AUGUSTA, Ga. - After falling behind 2-1, Lander roared back to win the final two sets and take a 3-2 victory over fourth-seed Georgia College to advance to the Peach Belt Tournament semifinals.  

In the first set, Lander would jump out to a 5-0 lead on Flagler. However, the Saints ended the bleeding and would make the score 5-3. The Bearcats continued to hold the lead through much of the set, and a kill by Daria De Carvalho Peixe would make it a 13-9 lead. Flagler slowly climbed back into the game and tied the score at 14. The two teams then traded points until back-to-back kills by De Carvalho Peixe and Christina Aguayo gave Lander a 22-20 lead. The Saints ended on a 5-1 run to take the first set.

The second set was a back and forth battle, with neither team leading by more than two points for much of the first part. Late in the set, the Bearcats got a kill from Maya Walker to give them a 19-16 lead. However, the Saints went on a 7-0 run to take a commanding 23-19 lead. The Bearcats wouldn't go down without a fight, answering three straight points to cut the deficit to one. Lander tied the game at 24, but Flagler would take the second set 27-25. 

 With their season on the line, the Bearcats came out on fire in the third set. With the score tied at four, Lander scored five-straight points to make 9-4 and cruised to the 25-19 win to keep the match going.  

With the score tied at five in the fourth set, Lander went on a 5-0 run to take the lead from the Saints. The Bearcats held off the Flagler as they chipped away at the lead. The Saints eventually tied the game at 15. The teams battled back and forth before Flagler took a 21-19 lead. The Bearcats finished the set on a 6-1 run to take the set and send the match to a fifth and deciding set.

Flagler started the final set off by scoring the first three points before Lander got kills from De Carvalho Peixe and Aguayo to make it a one-point deficit. A kill by Olivia Dow tied the set at five, but Flagler would pull away and take the set 15-11 to win the match and advance to the championship.   

Maya Walker led the Bearcats with 16 kills, while Aguayo added 15. Maddie Moss dished out 55 assists, and Patricia Pantoja had 26 digs, and Aguayo added 14.
