Bearcats march home with last minute goal over Flagler in double overtime

ST. AUGUSTINE, FLA. – After battling the Flagler Saints through regulation and one overtime period, Tom Marriott fired home the game-winning goal with 11 seconds remaining to let the Bearcats take a 2-1 victory back home with them.

Lander moves to 7-4-0 overall and 4-2-0 in the PBC. Flagler drops to 4-5-0 overall and 3-3-0 in the PBC.

Flagler took an early lead over the Bearcats, with the Saints scoring in the first minute of play.

After the initial goal, the two sides traded chances for most of the first half. That changed when Kevin Rubaszewski put away a shot off the post from Marriott to tie the game 1-1 in the 34th minute.

The Bearcats and Saints combined for 15 shots in the first frame of action. Lander attempted nine compared to the six from Flagler. Each team's goalkeeper made two saves.

Neither side would concede a goal for the remainder of regulation or the first overtime period. Going into the final overtime period, Lander had attempted 21 shots while Flagler had attempted 12.

Jacob Withers made a plethora of crucial saves in net for the Bearcats, with two of those coming in the second overtime period. He would end up making six saves in total on the day.

With time winding down, the Bearcats made one final push at breaking the stalemate. Pushing up the far side of the field, Marco Gueli flicked a pass to Marriott who fired a shot just inside the box to give Lander the 2-1 victory.

The Bearcats are off this Saturday but return to action with a trip to USC Aiken on Wednesday, October 13.
