GREENWOOD – The Lander men's soccer team capped off the regular season with a 3-1 victory over Flagler on Senior Day Saturday afternoon.
The Bearcats move to 10-7-0 overall and 7-5-0 in the PBC while Flagler drops to 9-7-0 and 7-5-0 in the PBC. With the win over the Saints, the Bearcats have clinched the No. 3 seed in the PBC Tournament.
Lander will either host North Georgia or Georgia Southwestern on November 6 at a time to be determined.
The Bearcats now have 35 winning seasons in program history, 26 seasons with a winning record in the PBC, seven consecutive winning seasons and 31 seasons with 10 or more wins. The men's soccer team is now at 498 all-time wins as a program and 148 wins in the PBC.
Lander has scored three or more goals in seven of its 10 wins this season and has outscored opponents 27-5 in those contests.
Both sides had chances in the first half, but neither the Bearcats nor Saints were able to find the back of the net.
Lander took two shots in the first frame, with both going on target. Flagler took one shot in the first half, with that going on goal as well.
Flagler drew first blood with a goal in the 54th minute of play to go up 1-0.
The Bearcats would tie the match at 1-1 in the 67th minute. After getting a long pass from the defensive zone, Max McNulty was able to battle his way into the box where he sent a blistering shot in for the first goal of the game for Lander. McNulty is second on the team with 11 goals on the season and 26 points.
Tom Marriott was next in line to score for Lander. The veteran midfielder took a cross from McNulty and froze the Flagler keeper with a deflection to the right side of the goal in the 68th minute. Marriott is up to 16 goals, 10 assists and 42 points this season. He is now tied with Clement Dauchy for the most goals scored since 2010 and is just the third Bearcat since 2006 to hit or surpass 40 points.
The Bearcats concluded their scoring in the 86th minute of play. Racing down the far side of the field, Luke Jordan found Max Bolton who proceed to fire home his third goal of the season from the top of the box.
Lander was efficient with its shooting, putting eight of its nine shots on net. Flagler sent two of its four shots on target.
Jacob Withers made one save as he picked up his fifth win of the season.
