Men's soccer pummels North Georgia 4-0 - Moves onto the semifinals

GREENWOOD – The Lander men's soccer team took care of business in the Peach Belt Conference quarterfinals with a 4-0 victory over North Georgia on Saturday.

Lander moves to 11-7-0 overall while North Georgia concludes their season at 6-11-1.

With the win over North Georgia, the Bearcats are now just one win away from capturing 500 wins as a program.

Lander is also now 18-4-2 all-time against North Georgia with a 9-1-1 record at home against the Nighthawks.

The Bearcats also see their record when scoring first move to 8-3, when leading at the half move to 7-0 and when scoring three or more goals the Bearcats are now 8-0.

This was also the seventh shutout recorded by the Bearcats this season.

The Bearcats scored two goals in each half, with seven of their 18 shots being taken in the first frame.

Lander got on the scoreboard early in the match after Jed Smith scored in the box from Max Landau and Max McNulty in the eighth minute of play.

The Bearcats weren't done scoring just yet, as in the 11th minute of action McNulty got his second assist of the match as he helped Jonah Miller score his first goal of the season to put Lander up 2-0.

Lander kept pushing the pace of play in the second half but couldn't find any results until late in the second frame.

Taking a free kick close to the midfield line, Max Landau sent a shot flying home for the third goal of the game for the Bearcats in the 84th minute while Marco Gueli made it a 4-0 match with a goal in the 87th minute of play.

Jacob Withers made three saves for his fourth shutout of the season and 27th of his career. Withers is now one shutout away from tying the program record of 28 career shutouts set by Jukka Masalin.

The Bearcats will face Clayton State in the PBC semifinals in Evans, Ga., at Blanchard Woods Park on November 12 at 2 pm.
