Brevard scores 25 as Lander wins 104-67, advances to PBC title game

GREENWOOD – The third-seeded Lander men's basketball team shot 60 percent from the floor and got 25 points from Tyler Brevard as the Bearcats advanced to the Peach Belt Conference Tournament championship game with a 104-67 semifinal victory over seventh-seeded Georgia College Saturday afternoon at Horne Arena. Lander's 37-point win was the largest margin of victory in PBC Tournament history.

Third-seeded Lander improved to 22-8 on the season and will meet No. 5 seed Columbus State for the PBC championship Sunday at 1:00 at Horne Arena.

Columbus State (18-12) upset top seed UNC Pembroke earlier Saturday in overtime on Landrius Horton's 3 at the buzzer.

The Bearcats took a big step toward a possible berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament Saturday. Sunday's winner earns an automatic NCAA bid as conference champion.

Lander cruised to an 18-point halftime advantage and outscored the Bobcats by 19 in the second half when it maintained a lead of 30 points or more the majority of the time.

The Bearcats made 40 of 67 shots from the floor, including 10 of 26 from 3-point range.

Georgia College (14-16) was the first seventh seed to reach the PBC semifinals since 2008. The Bobcats upset No. 2 seed Augusta on Wednesday night.

Brevard made 11 of 15 shots in leading all scorers and also grabbed seven rebounds.

LaRaymond Spivery also had a big game for Lander, scoring 19 points on seven of 12 shooting while sharing team-high honors with five assists.

The PBC's leader in 3-point shooting percentage Zane Rankin made three treys and finished with 11 points for the Bearcats. Morris Robinson Jr. also scored 11 points.

DaJuan Moorer was held to six points but paced Lander with 11 rebounds and five blocked shots. Sidney Robinson also had five assists for the Bearcats.

Jordan Thomas led the Bobcats with 21 points while Wesley Simpson added 20. Brandon Thomas scored 11 points while leading Georgia College with eight rebounds. Chris Parks scored 10 points while leading the Bobcats with six assists.

Trailing 10-7 at the 14-minute mark, the Bearcats scored 15 unanswered points to take a double-digit lead and never looked back.

Robinson drove to the basket for a layup to start Lander's run and then delivered a fast-break pass to Deon Berrien for another layup, Robinson Jr. swished a 3, Spivery scored twice in a row inside, and Moorer and Robinson added buckets for a 22-10 lead with 9:50 to go.

The Bearcats extended their lead with yet another run, this one nine unanswered points. Moorer scored on a put-back, Brevard made a pair of layups and Spivery hit a trey giving Lander a 34-15 advantage at 6:13.

Simpson scored twice in a row as Georgia College pulled within 36-23 at the three-minute mark. But Rankin hit a pair of treys and added a floater in the lane for eight quick points as the Bearcats cruised to a 46-28 halftime lead.

Lander's lead grew to 27 points at 59-32 four minutes into the second half as Spivery made a 3 and a tough bank shot, Brevard scored twice and Codrin Cobzaru added a layup.

The Bearcats took a 30-point lead on Rankin's 3 from the left corner, making it 67-37 with 12:44 left.

Elijah Alston scored Lander's next six points, Robinson hit a corner 3, and Spivery added a pair of free throws to make it 78-42 with 9:30 to go.

Lander hit the 90-point mark on Robinson Jr.'s layup with 5:31 left, making it 90-56.

Brevard made a driving layup and added a 3 from the right side as the Bearcat lead grew to 99-62 inside the four-minute mark.

Berrien's free throws with 3:25 to go pushed Lander past the 100-point mark for the second time this season.
