Box Score 2 GREENWOOD – The Lander softball team pounded out 18 runs on 30 hits en route to a doubleheader sweep over Converse Tuesday night at Doug Spears Field.
Lander (18-5-1) took a 4-0 lead in the first inning of game one as Haven Pesce singled home two Bearcats and Bridgett Tierney followed with a two-run double. RBI singles from Morgan Watson in the second inning and Ashley Vinson in the third pushed the lead to 6-0.
Converse (3-17) rallied to cut the deficit to 6-4 in the sixth, but Bricelin Balcer singled home Emily Campbell and scored on a Reagan Lunsford sacrifice fly to push the lead to 8-4. A two-run single from Jillian Terpenning extended the lead to 10-4 before the Valkyries pushed across one final run in the seventh.
Vinson (10-2) allowed one run over 4.0 innings to earn the win in the circle, notching six strikeouts and allowing just two hits.
In game two, a two-run homer from Watson and a Pesce RBI single put Lander up 3-0 in the first inning. Sydney Grimes, Watson, and Alana Frye each recorded RBI singles in the second inning and Jenelle Figueroa chipped in another in the third. Watson's RBI single in the sixth ended the evening.
Liz Gollin (4-0) struck out a career-high 11 batters in a four-hit shutout, while issuing just two walks.
Lander visits Emmanuel Friday night for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 5:00 p.m.
