Box Score 2 GREENWOOD – The Lander softball team notched three wins on Sunday in the Bearcat Round Robin at Doug Spears Field, completing an unbeaten weekend.
Lander (3-0) defeated Piedmont International 22-1 before sweeping Limestone 8-0 and 6-2.
"Overall, a great weekend and a great start to the season for us," said head coach Glen Crawford. "Now, our goal is to continue to get better each week."
After grabbing an 11-1 lead in the second inning of the season-opener against Piedmont International on Saturday before inclement weather forced a postponement, the Bearcats picked up right where they left off Sunday morning. Lander put up 10 runs in the fourth inning en route run-rule victory over the Bruins (0-2). Jennelle Figueroa led the Bearcats at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored in her Lander debut. Ashley Vinson drove in three and homered, along with Reagan Lunsford and Logan Coward. Eliza Gonzalez (1-0) held PIU to just one run on four hits with seven strikeouts in 5.0 innings to earn the victory in the circle.
In the Bearcats' first game of the day against Limestone (4-2), Lander did all its damage in the second inning. The Bearcats sent 12 batters to the plate and scored eight runs on eight hits. A one-out RBI double from Shannon Antonini and a RBI single from Figueroa put the Bearcats up 2-0 before Lander plated six runs with two outs. Vinson, Morgan Watson, and Delaney Guerrero recorded three consecutive RBI singles before Lauren Collie roped a two-run double to make the score 7-0. Haven Pesce added an RBI single to cap the scoring. Vinson (1-0) took the win for Lander, limiting the Saints to three hits with four strikeouts in 5.0 innings.
The finale against the Saints saw Lander strike first with RBI singles from Sydney Grimes and Vinson in the bottom of the first. Limestone cut the lead in half with a solo homer in the second, but the Bearcats moved ahead 4-1 with a RBI double from Guerrero in the third and another RBI knock from Grimes in the fourth. Alana Frye answered another Saints run with a sac bunt that scored Guerrero before Bridgett Tierney tripled home Pesce to make the score 6-2 Bearcats. Liz Gollin (1-0) surrendered two runs on three hits with eight strikeouts in a complete-game effort.
