Box Score AMERICUS, GA. - The Lander men's basketball team led for a majority of the game, but a big second half by Georgia Southwestern led to an 89-86 loss Saturday afternoon inside the Storm Dome.
With the loss, Lander falls to 8-3, 2-1 in the PBC while the Hurricanes improve to 6-3 and 1-2 in the PBC
Tyler Brevard led the Bearcats with 24 points on 8-of-13 shooting, while LaRaymond Spivery finished with 16 points. Zane Rankin scored a season-high 12 points while DaJuan Moorer added his fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The game started off slow as both teams could not seem to get the ball in the basket. The Bearcats would later pull ahead and take a 34-23 lead with four minutes to go in the half. Thanks to an 18-9 run to end the half the Bearcats would grow their lead to 50-32 going into the break.
The Hurricanes would come out of the break and go on their own 18-9 run to cut the deficit to single digits. The Hurricanes would continue to claw back as they would only be down 63-60 with 9:36 to go in the game. Both teams would continue to battle back and forth, but a huge three late by the Hurricanes would seal the game.
Georgia Southwestern capitalized on the Bearcats mistakes as they scored 31 points off turnovers.
Lander won the battle on the boards, 35-28. This is the first time this season that the Bearcats have outrebounded an opponent and lost.
The Bearcats return to action Wednesday when it returns home to face Augusta. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
