Bearcats build 40-10 lead, cruise to 12th consecutive victory

Box Score

GREENWOOD – The Lander women's basketball team built a 40-10 lead in the second quarter and cruised to its 12th consecutive victory, 86-46, over Peach Belt Conference rival Georgia College Wednesday night at Horne Arena.

The Bearcats improved to 16-3 overall, 11-0 in the PBC to match their best start in the league since the 2011-12 season.

The Bobcats fell to 5-14, 2-9.

It was the fewest points the Bearcats have allowed all season, eclipsing the 47 given up against Erskine on Nov. 14, and the fewest points Lander has allowed to a PBC opponent since a 73-44 victory over UNC Pembroke Feb. 6, 2017.

"We backed off the pressure a little bit and just focused on playing good defense," said head coach Kevin Pederson. "I thought our starters did a great job of coming in and making them work without giving them anything, play without using their hands. That got us off to a nice start."

Dailey led Lander with 22 points, making 11 of 14 shots from the floor while leading the team with eight rebounds. Dailey hit seven of eight shots in the first half for 14 points. She had more baskets in the first half than the entire Georgia College team (six).

The Bearcats had five players bunched between nine and 11 points. Harris scored 11 points while Sarah Crews added 10 points on four of five shooting while pacing Lander with five steals.

Zamiya Passmore scored nine points for the Bearcats while leading the team with six assists and adding three steals.

Miriam Recarte came off the Lander bench to score nine points, making three of three attempts from 3-point range while blocking five shots.

Jakiyah Parker added a career-high nine points for the Bearcats, all in the fourth quarter.

Makaila Cange had seven rebounds for Lander while Recarte grabbed six boards. Recarte and Quin'De'Ja Hamilton added four assists apiece for the Bearcats.

DeLayne Rotolo led Georgia College with 14 points, making four of five from behind the arc. Teammate Sarah Plemons was the game's top rebounder with 11.

Lander built a 21-6 lead after one period as Dailey was 5-for-5 from the floor, totaling 10 points. Passmore scored all nine of her points in the quarter with a pair of 3-point baskets and a three-point play.

The Bobcats were only two of 17 shooting in the first period while Lander made nine of 17.

Harris made three 3s while Cierra Revelle and Recarte each added one as the Bearcats opened the second quarter with a 19-4 run, building a 40-10 lead with 4:18 left.

Lander led 46-19 at halftime. The Bearcats were 19 of 34 shooting in the first half (56 percent) while Georgia College was only 6 of 30 (20 percent).

Dailey hit the 20-point mark with 4:20 left in the third quarter when her layup gave Lander a 54-24 advantage. Hamilton's 3 increased the lead to 62-27 with 1:45 left in the third.

After missing their first 11 shots from behind the arc, Rotolo finally hit a trey for the Bobcats with 34 seconds left in the third.

The Bearcats led 64-30 going into the final quarter.

Parker and Recarte each added 3s as Lander stretched its lead to 72-36 early in the fourth.

Parker's step-back jumper increased the Bearcat advantage to 84-39 with 2:57 left.
