Moorer's big second half helps Lander stay in first place with 76-70 win

GREENWOOD – The Lander men's basketball team got 19 points from DaJuan Moorer and shot 59 percent from the floor in the second half as the Bearcats stayed atop the Peach Belt Conference standings with a 76-70 victory over Georgia College Wednesday night at Horne Arena.

Lander improved to 15-4 overall and 9-2 in the PBC. The Bearcats, who extended their winning streak to five, began the night tied for first with USC Aiken and UNC Pembroke.

Aiken lost to Augusta Wednesday night but UNC Pembroke was victorious, leaving the Braves tied with Lander atop the PBC.

The Bobcats fell to 9-10, 6-5.

Lander, which made 17 of 29 shots in the second half, stayed undefeated at Horne Arena this season at 8-0.

"There were times in the first half when we tried to play our own type of ball," said head coach Drew Richards. "In the second half, they came out with more oomph, more spirit."

Moorer scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half, including seven points in the final three minutes. His go-ahead three-point play with just over two minutes to go gave the Bearcats the lead for good.

Moorer made seven of 10 shots from the floor and also led Lander with seven rebounds and blocked two shots.

Tyler Brevard added 13 points for the Bearcats, all in the second half, while sharing team-high honors with four assists.

Elijah Alson added 12 points for Lander while Deon Berrien contributed 11 points and four assists. LaRaymond Spivery also had four assists.

Jordan Thomas led the Bobcats with 18 points, Justin Cave scored 17, Wesley Simpson 11 and Chris Parks 10.

Georgia College was a perfect 15 for 15 at the free-throw line, including Thomas making all eight.

Parks made a layup that gave Georgia College a 20-12 lead at the nine-minute mark of the first half. But Berrien scored twice and added a free throw, pulling the Bearcats within 25-23 with three minutes to go.

Zane Rankin's 3 from the right corner cut Lander's deficit to 27-26 with 1:02 left. Georgia College held a 29-27 lead at the break.

DeShundre Rucker scored in the paint, tying the game at 31-all with 18:57 to go. Brevard gave Lander its first lead since it was 6-4 when his two free throws put the hosts on top, 35-34, with 17:39 left.

Berrien's free throw gave the Bearcats a 42-36 advantage with 14:17 left. Robinson's left corner 3 increased Lander's lead to 45-40 with 12:30 to go.

The Bobcats regained the lead on Simpson's 3 with a hand in his face as the shot clock expired, making it 46-45 with 11:30 left. But Alston put the Bearcats back on top with a 3 of his own.

Cave's three free throws pushed Georgia College's lead to 56-51 with 7:46 to go.

Brevard scored twice and then passed to Moorer for an open layup as Lander regained the lead at 57-56 with 5:55 left.

The lead changed hands four more times as Rucker spun inside for a layup, putting the Bearcats back on top 61-60 with 4:27 to go.

Moorer tied the game at 63-all with a layup at the 3:05 mark and then put Lander back on top, 66-63, with 2:26 to go. The Bearcats would not trail again.

Sidney Robinson's steal led to an Alston layup as Lander's lead grew to 68-63 with 2:05 left. Brevard's put-back made it 70-65 with 1:39 to go.

Cave's fourth trey of the game brought Georgia College within 70-68. But Alston hit two free throws, giving Lander a four-point lead with 57 seconds left.

Simpson's put-back cut the Bobcat deficit to 74-72 with 42 seconds to go. But Lander wound the shot clock down and Berrien's baseline jumper extended lead to 76-72 with 14 seconds left.

After Georgia College missed a shot, Moorer grabbed the defensive rebound, was fouled and added two free throws with five seconds left to put the game away.
