Box Score GREENWOOD – The Lander men's basketball team made 3-pointers on four consecutive possessions in the second half as the Bearcats pulled away from Peach Belt Conference rival Clayton State 92-77 Monday afternoon on Martin Luther King Day at Horne Arena.
Lander improved to 12-4 overall and 6-2 in the Peach Belt. The Lakers fell to 3-12, 1-7.
"I always thought our offense would be pretty good," said head coach Drew Richards. "We've got to find five guys that are willing to guard and if we can find those guys and have the offensive output that we've been having, we could be special."
Sidney Robinson paced the Bearcats with 19 points and four assists. Robinson made four of Lander's 13 shots from 3-point range.
Elijah Alston added 17 points for the Bearcats, hitting five of seven 3-point attempts.
Tyler Brevard reached double figures for an eight consecutive game, contributing 15 points for Lander.
DaJuan Moorer added 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds for the Bearcats.
Clayton State's Kyle Kincey led all scorers with 27 points, making 10 of 14 shots from the floor. Tionne Williams Jr. added 11 points and a team-high seven boards for the Lakers.
Lander went on a 15-2 run to break a 14-all tie. Robinson started the run with an off-balance 3 from the top of the key that hit the front of the rim and bounced in, Alston followed with a trey, and DeShundre Rucker added a three-point play during the run which ended with the Bearcats up 29-16 with 9:43 left in the half.
Brevard's layup gave Lander its biggest lead of the first half at 33-18 with 8:27 left. Alston's 3 from the left corner gave the Bearcats a 39-25 advantage with 5:41 to go.
Arusha Hunter had a three-point play and 3-pointer as Clayton State closed the half strong and pulled within 46-37 at the break.
Alston's 3 from the right side as the shot clock expired increased Lander's advantage to 53-40 with 17:04 left.
Deon Berrien found Moorer inside for a dunk and Robinson followed with a 3, giving the Bearcats a 63-49 lead inside the 14-minute mark.
Robinson, LaRaymond Spivery, Zane Rankin and again Robinson hit treys on consecutive possessions as Lander stretched its lead to 75-53 at the midway point of the second half.
Brevard's basket gave the Bearcats a 24-point lead, 82-58, their largest of the game, with 7:50 left.
Moorer's layup with 5:16 to go gave Lander an 88-66 advantage and although the Bearcats went almost three minutes before scoring again, they cruised to the victory.
