No. 8 Bearcats take down Newberry, 5-2

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The No. 8-ranked Lander men's tennis team earned its fifth consecutive win in a 5-2 victory over Newberry on Thursday afternoon. 

Lander (10-2) got off to a fast start, winning all three doubles flights to take a 1-0 lead. Ozan Cildir and Omar El-Moslemany opened things with a 6-1 win at No. 3, followed by a 6-4 victory from Axel Cronje and Adam Elliget at the No. 1 spot. Eirik Groner and Gabriel Couto also picked up a 6-4 win at No. 2. 

The Bearcats continued its impressive play in singles action, clinching the first four points to seal the match. Thomas De Negri put Lander up 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 5. Philippe Courteau extended the lead with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the No. 6 slot. Ozan Cildir earned Lander's third straight-set win in singles at No. 2, winning 6-3, 6-4. Leading 4-0, Tommaso Rossin earned a victory at No. 4 to give the Bearcats their 10th victory of the season. Newberry (7-10) won the final two singles matches of the day to avoid the shutout. 

Lander is back on the court Friday as the Bearcats take on Augusta at 1:30 p.m. in a road Peach Belt Conference match.
