GREENWOOD – The Lander softball team picked up a pair of wins over Concord and Claflin to complete a 3-1 weekend at the Bearcat Fleet Invitational. The Bearcats edged Concord 8-7 in eight innings before beating Claflin 10-2 in five innings.

"I thought it was a great tournament," said head coach Glen Crawford. "I thought in our games, we played very well. We're trying to close that gap to become that team that we really want to be and we're getting there. Overall, it was a great weekend."

Lander (9-4) led 7-4 heading into the seventh inning of game one, but Concord (1-3) tallied three runs to tie the game. In the bottom of the eighth, Shannon Antonini and Brianna Surrento worked a pair of one-out walks to load the bases. After Concord recorded a fielder's choice for the second out, Chandler Carey took a pitch off the leg to bring Abby Harris home for the game-winning run.

Antonini opened the scoring with a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of thet second inning, but the Mountain Lions answered quickly by tacking on three runs in the top of the third to pull ahead.

The teams traded runs in the sixth as Kelli McCormack answered Concord's run with an RBI double to plate Jamie Pisel and give the bearcats a 7-4 lead.

Surrento (1-0) was credited with the win after allowing four runs on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts in 5.0 innings of relief. Tara Williams (0-1) was saddled with the loss for Concord, surrendering two runs on two hits with three walks in 2.2 innings out of the bullpen.

The Bearcats jumped on Claflin (5-8) with eight runs in the third inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Surrento and a three-run homer off the bat of Carey. The Panthers got on the board with a two-run fourth inning, but Lander answered immediately with a solo homer from Surrento and an RBI single from Kasey Rogers
