No. 25 Bearcats cruise past Georgia Southwestern, 3-0

Box Score

GREENWOOD – The No. 25-ranked Lander men's soccer team used a pair of early goals and a dominant defensive effort to win its fourth consecutive match, earning a 3-0 victory over Georgia Southwestern on Saturday night at Van Taylor Stadium.

Lander (10-3-2, 4-1 PBC) has outscored its opponents 12-1 in its last four matches, while the Hurricanes (4-9, 0-5 PBC) remain winless in league play. The Bearcats registered their sixth shutout of the season while limiting Georgia Southwestern to just two shots in the match.

"The early goal really settled us down," said head coach Lee Squires. "Three points in the Peach Belt is never easy to come by and we've set ourselves up for a big game on Wednesday. It's been a good week for the boys."

Just 95 seconds into the match, Lander grabbed the lead. Max McNulty fired a shot from close range that was cleared out by a Hurricane defender. However, the clearance deflected off another Hurricane and ricocheted into the net to put the Bearcats up 1-0. Harry Bircumshaw doubled the lead in the ninth minute, taking a pass in the left side of the box and slotting it into the net to give Lander a 2-0 cushion.

Lander tacked on an insurance goal at the 76:38 mark when Robbie Young fired a shot from beyond the box that clipped off the goalie's hand and snuck under the crossbar.

Up next, Lander hosts Clayton State in a PBC showdown on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. on Senior Night at Van Taylor Satdium.
