Lander notches upset of No. 7 Francis Marion

Box Score

GREENWOOD – The Lander men's soccer team netted a pair of first half goals and got four saves from Jacob Withers to upset No. 7-ranked Francis Marion, 2-0, on Saturday night at Van Taylor Stadium.

Lander (5-1-1, 1-0 PBC) remained unbeaten at home in handing the Patriots (5-1-1, 0-1 PBC) their first loss of the year.

The Bearcats took the lead in the 25th minute when Robbie Young's slide tackle poked the ball free on FMU's end of the pitch. Young then dribbled around the Patriot keeper and buried a shot in the empty net to put Lander up 1-0.

Jed Smith added an insurance goal nine minutes later, heading home Oakley Hanger's corner kick to extend the lead to 2-0.

Withers saved a pair of shots in the second half to keep FMU off the board. The Patriots ended the evening with a 9-8 shot advantage. The loss snapped a 17-match scoring streak for Francis Marion, who had not been shut out since a 1-0 loss to Lander on September 22 last season.

Lander returns to action with a midweek match on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at Limestone Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
