Women's soccer blanks Mars Hill 3-0 in home opener

Box Score

GREENWOOD – The Lander women's soccer team used goals from Brianna Taylor, Juliette Vidal and Emily Jermstad to defeat Mars Hill 3-0 at Van Taylor Stadium on Saturday night.

Lander (2-0) attempted 19 shots in the win, while holding Mars Hill (1-1) to only one shot all evening. The Bearcats finished the match with an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.

"We played a pretty complete game tonight," said head coach Chris Ayer. "We have some young kids and they performed very well."

Lander went ahead in the 22nd minute when a Jermstad shot ricocheted off the crossbar, allowing Taylor to head it in for the go-ahead goal. The score marked Taylor's fifth career goal in just her seventh match at Lander.

The Bearcats stretched the lead in the second half when Vidal took a pass from Taylor in the box and slipped it inside the far post to give Lander a 2-0 lead at the 61:20 mark. Jermstad capped the scoring in the 84th minute, slicing the ball past the Lion goalkeeper Clare Witt to put the Bearcats ahead 3-0.

Sarah Owen and Hannah Cowan did not have to make a save in the victory for Lander.

The Bearcats host Newberry on Wednesday night at 5:00 p.m. at Van Taylor Stadium.
