Box Score 2 GREENWOO – Dariean Ward's walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the Lander softball team a 4-3 win over Francis Marion and a sweep of the Patriots in Lander's first Peach Belt Conference games of the season on Sunday afternoon.
Lander (14-4, 2-0 PBC) topped Francis Marion (9-11, 0-2 PBC) 4-1 in the first game.
The Bearcats trailed 3-0 enter the sixth inning of game two, but cut the deficit to a run as Sydney Grimes tripled home Casey Wooten and scored on a sacrifice fly from Halie Sorrow.
Grimes struck again with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, singling home Abby Harris to force extra innings.
After a one-out single from Kelli McCormack in the bottom of the eighth, Ward ended the game with a double that brought McCormack home from first.
In game one, Sorrow was the hero at the plate, recording an RBI triple in the first inning and a solo homer in the fourth to put Lander up 2-0.
The Bearcats tacked on two more runs in the fifth, including an RBI single from Sorrow, before Francis Marion got on the board with a solo home run in the top of the seventh.
Lander steps out of conference action on Thursday as the Bearcats travel to Eckard.
