GREENWOOD – The No. 9-ranked Lander men's tennis team ran into one of the top teams in the nation on Friday afternoon as the Bearcats fell 9-0 to top-ranked Georgia Gwinnett out of the NAIA at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center.
The Grizzlies (4-0), winners of four consecutive NAIA national championships, picked up their 59th consecutive victory and their fifth in series history over the Bearcats (4-1).
Lander had a chance to earn the first point against the Grizzlies all season in doubles play, but the No. 3 duo of Eirik Groner and Gabriel Couto fell 8-6 as Georgia Gwinnett claimed all three doubles points.
The Bearcats fought hard in singles play, but were only able to win one set, as Philippe Courteau pushed his No. 3 singles contest to a third-set tiebreaker before dropping a 6-0, 4-6, 10-6 decision.
Lander travels to Belmont Abbey on Saturday, Feb. 17, for a 1:00 p.m. match.
