Lander storms back with two late goals to stun Newberry

Box Score

Newberry, S.C. – Freshman midfielder Devin Duhme played the part of hero on Saturday as the Cincinnati native buried an incredible game-winning goal with just three seconds remaining to lead the Lander women's soccer team (2-0) past Newberry (1-1) in dramatic fashion.

After falling behind on Desi Hernandez's goal at the 24:05 mark of the first half, the Bearcats netted two goals in the final 6:31 to give Lander its first win over Newberry since 2003. The victory also marked Lander's first win in a road opener since 2014.

Juliette Vidal started the rally as the freshman midfielder connected with the game's equalizer with just under six minutes remaining in the second half. Vidal converted with a header that went over the keeper's head in the 83rd minute.

For Duhme, the goals marks her second career score in just her second career game with the Bearcats. Both of Duhme's goals have been game-winners as the talented freshman is already halfway to the four goals she scored as a senior at Lakota West High School. Vidal's goal was the first of her Bearcat career.

Lander will be back in action on Wednesday at Van Taylor Soccer Stadium at 5:00 p.m. as the Bearcats play host to rival Erskine (0-1).
