Box Score 2 WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Lander softball team bounced back from a walk-off defeat in game one to pull out a game two win and earn a split against Rollins College in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday night at Martin Luther King Jr. Park. The Bearcats dropped the first contest 5-4 before prevailing in game two, 4-3.
Lander moves to 10-14 overall, while Rollins goes to 15-9.
In the first game, Sarah Piening (9-2) earned the win for Rollins after striking out three, walking three and allowing one run on one hit in two innings pitched.
The Bearcats' McKenzi Ferguson (4-7) suffered the loss, striking out one, walking one and allowing two earned runs on five hits in 1.2 innings.
Rollins took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Lander went up 2-1 in the top of the second on a two-run homer from Emily Marousek. The Tars reclaimed the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the inning.
The Bearcats evened the score on Destiny Clyde's RBI single in the fifth and went ahead 4-3 in the sixth inning on an error that plated Chandler Carey.
The Tars tied the game on an RBI single from Abigail Sexton in the top of the seventh, then loaded the bases with no outs before Grace Street singled up the middle to give Rollins a walk-off win.
Carey batted 2-for-3 for Lander, while Clyde and Marousek each went 1-for-3 with a walk.
In the second game, Ferguson (5-7) earned the win for Lander, striking out four and allowing one run on one hit in 2.2 innings of relief.
Piening(9-3) took the loss for the Tars, striking out three, walking three and allowing two earned runs on two hits in four innings pitched.
A Madison Moore single in the first scored Clyde to give Lander a 1-0 lead. After Rollins pulled ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the second, Clyde knotted the game by scoring on an error in the third inning.
With the game still tied at 2-2 in the top of the seventh, Brianna Surrento laced a two-run single into centerfield, bringing Clyde and Kelli McCormack around to score.
Rollins got a solo home run from Hailee Kiesling in the bottom of the seventh, but Ferguson held on to give the Bearcats a 4-3 victory.
For Lander, Clyde and Surrento each batted 2-for-3.
Lander's spring break trip to the Sunshine State continues on Wednesday afternoon with a doubleheader against Embry-Riddle.
